The Karnataka health department has issued a notification prohibiting the use of artificial colouring agents in vegetarian, fish and chicken kebabs, citing grave concerns over public health.
The government has said that the quality of kebabs sold across the state is poor, which can adversely impact the health of people over time.
“Artificial colors are harmful to the body and can cause adverse health effects,” said state’s health minister Dinesh Gundu Rao, adding that food vendors violating the norm will have to face “serious action” including seven years of jail time and a fine of up to Rs 10 lakhs.
Following the complaints of eateries using artificial colours received by Karnataka"s Food Safety and Standards Department, it tested 39 samples of kebabs in the laboratories and found that at least eight of them were unfit for consumption for using artificial colours.
While testing, Sunset Yellow was found in seven samples, whereas Sunset Yellow and Carmoisine was found in another sample.
Earlier in March, the health minister banned another food colour, Rhodamine-B, widely used in cotton candy and ‘Gobi Manchurian’, which is a cancer-causing chemical.
